At LAS, we specialize in community-based breastfeeding help. We see breastfeeding as part of normal, healthy life. We help families in their homes because that is where breastfeeding most often happens. In-home problem solving lets us help families find solutions that fit their own lives.
A problem solving home visit includes a 1 to 2 hour visit in your home. During the visit we take a breastfeeding history, talk about your concerns, observe your baby feeding, check your baby’s weight, and create a solution plan. We help connect you to any other services that you might need and provide a consult report for you to share with your baby’s doctor. We are happy to communicate directly with your baby’s doctor as well. After the visit we follow-up by phone or email as needed.
Ruth charges $100 for an initial visit. Adria charges $75. For $125, Adria will do as many home visits as you need to get breastfeeding on the right track and then provide long-term follow-up. We can provide forms and information if you would like to request reimbursement from your health insurance company. Our first priority is helping mothers — if payment is a problem for you, let us know so we can arrange a sliding fee scale or payment over time.
We teach independent breastfeeding classes in Ruth’s home. Our classes are limited to small groups (2 to 4 families) so that we can answer individual concerns. We can arrange classes to fit your schedule. Expectant grandmothers are welcome to join the class. In our classes we can share information with you that is not constrained by institutional requirements or product promotion.
We offer two classes: Expectations and Transitions. In Expectations we cover birth through the first few weeks of breastfeeding. We help families learn to recognize normal breastfeeding patterns and situations where they need help. We talk about ways to avoid common early breastfeeding problems. We encourage families to take Expectations early in pregnancy. In Transitions we talk about common challenges as babies grow older including mother’s return to work and pumping. We offer the classes individually ($20, 6:30-9 weeknight) or as an all day series ($30, 9-3 Saturday or Sunday). Contact us for current class dates. If you can find another family or two we can arrange a class at your convenience.
We stock a few products that our clients have found helpful, including some pumps (rental and for purchase), baby carriers, and nursing bras. Please contact us for more information. *Used Lactina rental pumps for sale. Call Ruth for details (608-848-3037)*
